Tips for harness training your puppy

by lalPalaK

If you’re considering getting a dog, you may consider adopting a puppy. Puppies are adorable, but they can also be a lot of work.

If you’re not sure how to train your puppy, don’t worry. The tips below will help you get started on the right foot with your new furry friend.

 Set boundaries early

The most important thing to remember about training your puppy is that it’s a process, not one you will master in a day. It takes time, patience, and consistency to teach your puppy good habits, just as it does to break old ones. In addition,  It is a good idea to use a dog harness because it can be helpful.

Setting boundaries early is key in preventing bad habits from forming: if you have rules set from the beginning, your dog can integrate them into their overall understanding of what’s expected of them.

Use positive reinforcement (rewards)

Positive reinforcement (also known as rewards) like treats or affection makes learning easier for your puppy. They help reinforce good behavior and motivate them to continue doing things correctly.

Positive reinforcement teaches your puppy that they are being rewarded for correct actions—it doesn’t teach them what those correct actions are; that’s where the boundaries come in. Setting boundaries early on is crucial to getting your dog on the right track and teaching them what is and isn’t acceptable behavior.

 Teach them verbal cues

When you get a puppy, the first thing you want to do is to teach them verbal cues. We think they are the easiest way to communicate with your pup. The only downfall is that getting your dog to associate the cue with an action (like a command) can be a little tricky.

For example, if you are going to teach your dog “DOWN!”, make sure that when you say “DOWN!”, she’s laying down. It doesn’t work well to train them when they are standing up or running around. It is hard enough to get them to stop moving, let alone be able to associate it with the verbal cue. Teaching them while they are young is much easier than training them as older dogs.

Socialize your puppy early and often

Socialization is important for many reasons. It helps a puppy develop into a well-rounded dog that won’t be afraid of unfamiliar people, places, or situations. It also makes your puppy more likely to get along with other dogs and less likely to act aggressively when he’s older. Most importantly, it helps ensure that your puppy grows up to be a healthy dog who can live as long as possible.

 Make training a game

To make training a game, you have to start with the basics. The most important thing is that you should always use a leash when you’re training your puppy. While your puppy may be eager to learn and get treats, it’s important that he or she learns how to follow the leash.

Position yourself in front of your puppy, holding their leash loosely so that they can move around comfortably. As you handle the leash, let them move around, but don’t let them pull away or wander too far away from you. Keep track of where they are at all times.

Take a few treats and lay them out on a flat surface. Praise your dog while they’re eating the treats, and give them more if they finish any of them sooner than you’d like. Repeat this until they lose interest in eating the treats on their own.
